ABOUT WEF

WFSDEF OBJECTIVES
Math and Reading Objectives
Objective 1: Our goal is to have 80% of our students at the Benchmark level, 15% at the Strategic level, and 5% at the Intensive level as measured by the DIBELS assessment.
In order to reach this goal, we are putting a 3-tiered reading program into place. Students will fit into the core reading program, a strategic intervention program, or an intensive intervention program. We are monitoring student progress with a benchmark assessment given 3X per year (Sept., Jan. & May). Students in the strategic and intensive intervention programs will be monitored once or twice a month. We are currently piloting a new, research based core program. Our greatest need in our reading area is for intervention programs that target specific weak areas in reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, phonemic awareness and phonics. We need to build our library of program options so that small groups can be formed to remediate specific weaknesses.
Objective 2: Our goal is to increase the percentage of our students falling in the Advanced/Proficient range to a level comparable to our reading scores (about 75% Proficient/Advanced) as measured by our 3rd and 4th grade CRT scores.
Our math CRT proficiency rates are about 12 % points lower than our reading proficiency rates. We have increased our standardized total math scores by about 4 % points and computation scores by up to 20% points over the past 4 years. Even though we are improving, we still have gains to make in order to reach our goal of 75% of our students reaching the proficient level in math. Our greatest need in the math area is for opportunities for updated professional development for teachers. New state standards and assessments require students to write extended responses for math problems and our teachers would benefit from additional professional development to boost their ability to teach and assess math reasoning and communicating.
